Visit a national wildlife refuge during National Wildlife Refuge Week, October 12-18.  This is a network of more than 97 million acres of public lands that is home to 700 species of birds, 220 mammals, and more than 1000 species of fish.

Whether you build a nesting box, photograph butterflies, or watch wildlife from an auto tour route, there is no better time to celebrate America’s natural treasures.  The national wildlife refuges are planning special activities and events geared for families and children, hikers and birders, anglers and photographers throughout the week. So set aside some time to get acquainted with a national wildlife refuge in your community.

The National Wildlife Refuge System, established in 1903, encompasses 548 national wildlife refuges and there’s at least one in every state. You can usually find one within an hour’s drive of most major cities.  They all offer recreation that revolves around the natural world.
