If you take spare batteries for your cell phone or laptop or camera with you while traveling, and you travel by plane, this is important for you to know.

The bad news is that you may NOT pack any spare lithium batteries in your checked baggage, although you can pack an electronic device with the batteries installed in it.  This rule is in place to reduce the risk of lithium battery fires.

The good news is that you can carry all the spare batteries you want to in your carry-on luggage, if you protect the terminals which can be done by slipping each one separately into a plastic bag.

However, you are limited to bringing only two extended-life spare rechargeable lithium batteries in carry-on luggage.

For more information about this, as well as other safety-related regulations, go to the Department of Transportation’s Safe Travel site at http://safetravel.dot.gov.
