Drinking-Water Safety Tips When Traveling

Drinking unsafe water when traveling abroad can make you very sick.  Here are ways to avoid that.

When you order bottled water at restaurants, there are three ways to be absolutely certain that the server isn’t just giving you tap water in a mineral water bottle.

  1. Make sure the seal around the cap hasn’t been broken.  If it has, send it back.
  2. If you order sparkling water (such as Perrier), then you can be SURE it doesn’t contain tap water!
  3. Make sure they open the bottle at your table.  Insist on it.

And don’t forget that the ice cubes are made from tap water.  Don’t let them put ice cubes in ANYTHING you drink, if you’re unsure about the water quality.

Also, if you think the water quality is unsafe in a country you are visiting, be careful to not get any in your mouth when you shower.  And be sure to brush your teeth with bottled water, not the tap water.

Did you know that if they wash the veggies that go into your salad, there could be enough of a residue to upset your stomach?  Stick with fruits and veggies that you can peel when visiting third-world countries especially.

I had a friend who got VERY ill from drinking fresh-squeezed orange juice in Egypt.

It’s best to be OVERLY cautious rather than overly sick as a result.
